Bye bye Rothmans roundabout

Rothmans roundabout to become traffic light junction

Apr 28, 2010

The infamous Rothman's roundabout which is a popular landmark for residents here and known for its notorious peak hour congestion will soon be replaced with a RM5.5 million traffic light junction.

Petaling Jaya Mayor Datuk Mohd Roslan Sakiman said work on phase one of the project is scheduled to start in June and will take eight months to complete.

"Phase two will involve the connection of Jalan Harapan (one of the roads that feed into the roundabout) to the Sprint Highway," he said.

Roslan said the cost is high as the task involves moving of utility cables and pipes that run under the roundabout.

On another matter, Jalan Barat in Petaling Jaya will be renamed Jalan V. David on May 1, it was revealed at the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) full-board meeting today.

There was, however, some displeasure over this as councillor Cynthia Gabriel pointed out that the MBPJ had proposed Jalan 223 instead of Jalan Barat as Jalan Barat seemed to have some historical significance.

"The state should have informed the council of the decision to rename Jalan Barat. I only found out via the invitation sent to me that it was Jalan Barat that was to be renamed, and not Jalan 223," she said.

She felt there should have been some consultation with the residents at least.
Fellow councillor Latheefa Koya, in agreeing with Cynthia, said residents should have been consulted as the change will involve their address.

The event to commemorate the renaming of the road will be held on Labour Day which falls on May 1. Dr V. David was a union leader and active in upholding workers rights. He was also the former DAP parliamentarian for Puchong. -- theSun

Mini Library @ Jusco Mahkota Cheras

I visited the Jusco Mahkota Cheras last Saturday for the first time. It is much smaller than Jusco Cheras Selatan, just the right size for a neighborhood shopping centre, and there is no cinema.

We had brunch at Sushi King and thereafter walked around the shopping centre.

There is a mini library run by the Perpustakaan Negara Malaysia on the 1st floor. Finally a library nearby. Don't expect to see a huge collection of reading materials, this is a mini library.

To borrow books, you need your MyKad and for the children, their MyKid. As of this moment, we still can't borrow the books.
