TheStar: Wind up Proton as it’s a failure, says Bung Mokhtar

Tuesday October 19, 2010

BACKBENCHER’S Club deputy chairman Datuk Bung Moktar Radin has called for Proton to be wound up claiming that the national car maker had embarrassed the nation by trying to pass off a rebadged Mitsubishi Lancer as the Proton Inspira.

Bung Moktar (BN-Kinabatangan) said he could not accept Proton’s excuse that it was too costly to develop its own car to replace the Proton Waja.

“Proton said it would cost RM700mil to produce a new car. If it cannot afford (to design a new model), then just close down.

“Do not embarrass the country. Proton has been doing research and development for years. Don’t tell me that there is no design that can make the people proud,” he said while debating the Budget 2011....

Malaysia's Low Population Growth

Low population growth a big worry

Malaysia is worried about its declining population growth rate and whether there will be enough young adults after it becomes a developed country.

Statistics show that the population growth rate has dropped to 2.2% in 2008 from 2.6% in 2000. The declining trend has been in evidence since the country’s first census in 1970.

“If we do not take appropriate steps, we will have an aging population in the next 20 to 30 years,” said National Population and Family Development Board director-general Datuk Aminah Abdul Rahman...

Bye bye Rothmans roundabout

Rothmans roundabout to become traffic light junction

Apr 28, 2010

The infamous Rothman's roundabout which is a popular landmark for residents here and known for its notorious peak hour congestion will soon be replaced with a RM5.5 million traffic light junction.

Petaling Jaya Mayor Datuk Mohd Roslan Sakiman said work on phase one of the project is scheduled to start in June and will take eight months to complete.

"Phase two will involve the connection of Jalan Harapan (one of the roads that feed into the roundabout) to the Sprint Highway," he said.

Roslan said the cost is high as the task involves moving of utility cables and pipes that run under the roundabout.

On another matter, Jalan Barat in Petaling Jaya will be renamed Jalan V. David on May 1, it was revealed at the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) full-board meeting today.

There was, however, some displeasure over this as councillor Cynthia Gabriel pointed out that the MBPJ had proposed Jalan 223 instead of Jalan Barat as Jalan Barat seemed to have some historical significance.

"The state should have informed the council of the decision to rename Jalan Barat. I only found out via the invitation sent to me that it was Jalan Barat that was to be renamed, and not Jalan 223," she said.

She felt there should have been some consultation with the residents at least.
Fellow councillor Latheefa Koya, in agreeing with Cynthia, said residents should have been consulted as the change will involve their address.

The event to commemorate the renaming of the road will be held on Labour Day which falls on May 1. Dr V. David was a union leader and active in upholding workers rights. He was also the former DAP parliamentarian for Puchong. -- theSun
