Monday Jam Blues (22.09.2008)

On Monday I left the office around 6:30pm, after clearing as much work that I could.

My colleague told me that he usually leaves the office at 7pm and that the traffic is smoother. So I thought that 6:30pm, the traffic would be smoother compare to 5pm. During the fasting month, our Muslim friends would leave the office earlier.

On the East-West link (Connaught highway) after the 50 cents toll, the jam started, all the way to the turn off to the Cheras-Kajang highway.

Picture: Towards Connaught, opposite Shell petrol station

*Picture taken with SE K800i

The reason for the jam was, that a lorry broke down after the Connaught U-turn, blocking half the road. Sigh!!! No picture, cause when when I reached where the lorry broke it was already dark.

I reached home around 8pm.

It is very obvious that some newspapers and even the police are not non-partisan but very pro-government.

These are just 2 of the most recent events that happened here in Malaysia.

MalaysiaKini: Theresa To Sue Govt

Freed MP to sue gov't for 'unlawful detention'
Sep 19, 08 4:29pm
http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/90053

Parliamentarian Teresa Kok, who was released today after being held for seven days under the Internal Security Act, will sue the government for her ‘unlawful arrest and detention’.
...she was repeatedly interrogated by her captors on three issues.

This include whether she had mobilised the Bandara Kinrara residents to put up a petition over the azan (morning call to prayer) issue and whether she had said that the allocation for Islamic religious council Jais should be used for other religions.

The third issue was her previous statement opposing to the road signs written in Jawi.

“I denied the first two,” the Seputeh MP, who was released unconditionally at 1pm, told journalists at the DAP headquarters in Petaling Jaya.
...
“I see my detention as a ploy by Umno to cover up its embarrassment over the Ahmad Ismail’s racist remarks,” she said in referring to the suspended Umno’s Bukit Bendera division chief.

Investigate the 'culprits'
Kok also urged the police to investigate Umno politician and Selangor opposition leader Mohd Khir Toyo who had reportedly alleged her as describing the azans as “disturbing the peace” of local residents.

Similarly, the three-term MP also want the police to investigate Malay daily Utusan Malaysia and its columnist Zaini Hassan, who played up her alleged role in the issue.

She singled out the Umno-owned Utusan for triggering religious controversy among Muslims through an article last week entitled, ‘Azan, jawi, JAIS, UiTM dan ba-alif-ba-ya’.

The column, written by senior editor Zaini, lambasted an unnamed woman politician for going to a mosque and demanding that it lowers the volume of loudspeakers during the Muslim call to prayer.

The individual was described by Zaini as a ‘bespectacled politician’, a racist and a chauvinist. However, the mosque has denied any involvement by Kok.

Meanwhile, Lim alleged that the police report lodged against Kok was first lodged by an “operative” from ruling MCA’s Puchong division in Selangor.

Yes! Theresa Released From ISA

After Sin Chew reporter was release on Sept 13, today Theresa Kok is also out from ISA detention. The innocent shall be set free.

From MalaysiaKini...
Teresa Kok released
S Pathmawathy | Sep 19, 08 1:22pm
http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/90038

DAP Seputeh MP Teresa Kok was released unconditionally at 1pm today, after being held under the Internal Security Act for seven days.
...
"(There is) no reason at all to put me under ISA... What have I done? What have I said?" she asked.

"During the whole one week, they didn't show any proof or evidence to show that I made statements that have caused racial and religious tension."
...
Kok was held under the ISA detention for allegedly causing tension and conflict among races.

The three-term MP has been in news in recent days - especially in Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia - after it was claimed that she had told mosque officials in Kota Damansara, Sri Serdang and Puchong Jaya to tone down the call to prayer.

Kok, who is also Kinrara state assemblyperson, has denied the allegations and one of the mosques, Masjid Kota Damansara, has clarified that a damaged amplifier has resulted in the calls to prayers to be made without the aid of a PA system.

Another mosque, Masjid Kinrara, has also denied that she was involved in a residents petition asking for the mosque to lower the volume of its loudspeakers during prayers.

MalaysiaKini: Law Minister Zaid 'tenders resignation'

From MalaysiaKini... when will the PM go.

Law Minister Zaid 'tenders resignation'
Fauwaz Abdul Aziz | Sep 15, 08 2:17pm
http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/89728

De facto Law Minister Zaid Ibrahim has tendered his resignation over the government's use of the Internal Security Act, which allows detention without trial, against three individuals last week.
...
Zaid argued that the ISA should only be used to curb terrorism, which was the reason why it was first enacted in 1960.

"The problem with the ISA now is that it is used against certain people, it is a very unjust law," he added.

Zaid also felt "very sad that people like Teresa, whom I know personally, can be seen as a threat."

"I can't see how a journalist doing her duty, or even Raja Petra, can be seen as a national threat. If their statements upset certain people, let the police investigate," he said.

Zaid added that he was against the government using such a "strong-arm tactic" against any individuals...

My Toe After Changing New Bandage

My bandage was suppose to last till this Friday, but last Friday my toe bled much more than anticipated until it looked looked like this, dried up blood.

I was afraid it would get infected if I did not change the bandage, worst still lose my toe.

My toe still hurts when I walk, and eventhought I can drive, after a while of driving my toe will signal to me... time to rest, get your foot off the pedal.

I went to see the doctor at Pantai Cheras Hospital to change the bandage. It was a painful experience when Dr Ong took out the old bandage and hurts even more when he applied antiseptic... arrrrrrrrggh.

This is how my toe looks like with the new bandage.....

A Day In Hospital Pantai Cheras (Updated)

I was admitted to Pantai Hospital, Cheras this morning (Sept 12th) to remove a growth from my 2nd toe, right feet.

Chronology of events:
9:00am
Marilyn and I arrived at the hospital slightly before 9am for my appointment with Dr Ong (not related to brother Jo Ong) :-P.

10:00am
I was admitted into a double room around 10 am. Mmmm, why am I being admitted into a room, just for a minor operation? according to the nurse, it is the hospital's standard operating procedure.

12:00pm
Had lunch in the room, sweet sour fish.... no comment on the hospital food.

1:00pm
I accompanied Marilyn to the canteen for her lunch. She had noodle soup. At RM3:80 it was worth if, lots of fishballs and veg.

Marilyn just finished her lunch and we were on the way up to the room when the nurse called me around 1:20pm, asking where was I, as I was need to be prepared for surgery.

Yes I had to stripped out of everything and
wear the hospital gown, opening at the back. Quite sexy I think. No specs, no handphone (son can't take photos of the operation)...

1:35pm
Wheeled into the operating ward around 1:35pm. I joked with Marilyn, "I will be out in 5 minutes".

Dr Ong asked me if I wanted to sleep through the operation, I said no.... did I regret it.

The actual operation in the operating theater (OT) took around 5-10 minutes.

The most painful part was the injection to 'numb' my toe while the doctor cut of the growth. Second most painful, was like someone squeezing you toes very hard, that part was when the doctor stitched my toe.

Wheeled out of the OT, and put on observation for around 20-30 minutes.

2:15pm
Wheeled out of the operating ward at 2:15pm. Thats what I heard the nurse mentioned when she wrote in her report.

I was handed over from the operating ward nurses to the room ward nurses. I felt like 'goods' being transported from one place to another.

5:00pm
Discharged from the hospital slightly after 5pm. Overall, around 8 hours in the hospital, just to remove a growth from my toe.

The doctor will send the "cut-off" growth to the lab for analysis. will know the result this coming Friday,

The "agonizing" hours in the hospital was mainly waiting for the doctor and also to process the insurance for payment.

The operation is covered by my company insurance (ING), praise God. :-D

5:15pm
Left for home to celebrate Andrea's 4th birthday and the moon cake festival.

Picture:
Top left-Lunch. Middle-right before being wheeled out from the room. Top-right-lift ceiling.
Middle left-right My toe before and after the operation.

After a couple of weeks eating lunch at 3 Two Square, today my colleagues and I decided to walk to New Seaview Restaurant, in Paramount PJ.

Reasonably priced RM5.

My Journey Home: Traffic Congestion and Bottles

Since the fasting month started, leaving the office at 5pm sharp is not such a good idea. Traffic is much worst than usual when I leave the office at this time.

So during this Ramadan period, leaving later is a better option.....

Jalan University
Jalan University has its normal bad crawl in front of UMMC (UH) and made worst by the indiscriminately parked vehicles in front of the hospital. A bottleneck and the authorities have still not solve the problem.

The flow of traffic joining the traffic into Federal Highway is terrible. Drivers have to inch their way onto the highway.

Federal Highway
The cause of the crawl from PJ to KL on the highway is the exit to East West Link highway at Mid Valley. Three to four lanes of vehicles trying desperately and queue jumping to exit the highway towards Cheras.

A major bottleneck here. Vehicles have to squeeze their way through to two lanes, and vehicles cutting queues, and cutting left towards NPE, motocyclist zig zagging in between vehicles and another lane of cars exiting Mid Valley entering the same two lane road.

A recipe for a major jam that effect motorist on the Federal Highway for miles and miles.

East-West Link (Taman Connaught)
Long queues at the turn off to Bandar Tun Razak spills onto the highway, and would block the left lane of the highway, causing a bottleneck for those heading towards Taman Connaught.

Taman Connaught as usual is filled with slow traffic making a u-turn to the other part of Taman Connaught or heading towards Kajang, another bottleneck.

Construction of a flyover next to Phoenix Plaza (now a white elephant) is another cause of the jam here. Another bottleneck.

Taman Connaught U-Turn to Close?
When I passed the U-turn, I saw a sign 9.09.2008, U-turn Close. Will they close the u-turn and open the new flyover on 9.9.2008?

Chinese Squatters: The Ball Is In UMNO's Court

News from MalaysiaKini... Ahmad apologize or Gerakan moves

Gerakan ready to cut links with defiant Umno leader
Sep 5, 08 5:23pm
http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/89181

Barisan Nasional component party Gerakan has upped the ante in the Ahmad Ismail ‘racial slur’ controversy.

The party has today issued an ultimatum - that the Gerakan Bukit Bendera division will “disassociate itself” from the Umno division chief if he continues to refuse to apologise for his allegedly racist remarks.

“(We) will have nothing to do with Ahmad Ismail any more. We call upon all like-minded Malaysians to do the same,” said Gerakan Penang secretary Dr Teng Hock Nan in a strongly-worded statement.

Teng described Ahmad’s refusal to apologise as “a clear sign of disrespect and insubordination” to both the prime minister and deputy prime minister.
...

Calls for Gerakan to leave BN
Gerakan has demanded that action be taken against Ahmad.

“We urge the prime minister to take stern action without fear or favour against Ahmad, not only for his racist and extremist remark which jeopardises and threatens the existing racial unity and harmony in the country but also for his disrespect and insubordination to the prime minister and his leadership,” said Teng.

Meanwhile, the party’s Penang Youth wing called on Gerakan to withdraw from BN “immediately”.
...
“If Umno not willing to listen and respect the views of other member parties, then it gives no reasons for Gerakan to continue working with Umno in BN,” he said.
