Yahoo Messenger Scam, Spam Or Viru

I received some messages on diet supplements on my Yahoo Messenger this morning from a couple of friends. Should just ignore these messages.

Seems funny, cause my friends whom I received these messages are Chinese educated and their English is not so good (sorry no disrespect to them). I tried to reply to my friends, but they were offline.

The messages...
"I have been taking Acai Berry now for over a month and already lost 36 pounds, it is the same stuff that was on the Oprah show, Mikey and Karine lost so much weight too with no diets or excersise. Get it now, its only five bucks a bottle, we are living proof that it works like magic. Get it over at http://flaptear.com"

"Hey, how are you. Just wanted to let you know about these new supplements I tried. I lost 12 pounds in just a week and a half. Best thing, it only cost me $5. Check it out here: http://minebide.com"

"FInally after all this time I found the only way to lose a lot of weight in just a few weeks and not have to diet or excercise. I seen it on Oprah and the news, ordered it and lost 36 pounds in just a few weeks and still losing, they have it now for only five dollars order it at http://flaptear.com"

"Quick question, did you see that Oprah episode on losing weight? I found the same goodies for 5 dollars and I lost 9 pounds allready. See for yourself http://flapfade.com"

Read More On SMS Scams

In todays The Star....

Bank Negara: SMS scams tied to unauthorised withdrawals

PETALING JAYA: Unauthorised bank withdrawals are mostly caused by SMS scams which inform victims they have won cash prizes, says Bank Negara Malaysia.

The central bank said it received 165 complaints last year on illegal withdrawals, all of which were due to customers knowingly or unknowingly divulging personal information such as their personal identification number (PIN) and password to third parties or fraudsters.

“Banks will never request for such personal information through e-mail, SMS or phone calls,” Bank Negara said in a statement yesterday.

It urged the public not to respond to any SMS or e-mail requesting personal information for banking accounts.

SMS Scams Report in NST 2008/06/22

Report on NST on SMS scams. Take precautions, think first... there is nothing free in this world.

SMS SCAM: Congratulations, you've won RM19,000

...
The perpetrators prey on a person's greed by sending an SMS saying they had won a contest or lottery. ...

SMS SCAM: How the text message scammers work
http://www.nst.com.my/Current_News/NST/Sunday/Frontpage/2274142/Article/index_html
...Type A: The scammers randomly select numbers and send SMS messages to them
...Type B: A SMS was sent saying you have won an overseas lottery.

SMS SCAM: Fraudsters usually use foreign telephone numbers
http://www.nst.com.my/Current_News/NST/Sunday/Frontpage/2273838/Article/index_html
..."Usually, these SMSes feature a foreign phone number for the recipient to respond to.
...Maxis
...Astro
...Petronas
...Maybank

SMS SCAM: Good sense saved legal adviser
http://www.nst.com.my/Current_News/NST/Sunday/Frontpage/2273858/Article/index_html
..."The man who picked up my call had an Indonesian accent. He congratulated me and asked me if I wanted to collect the winnings in cash or cheque.

"Before I could answer, he said it would be easier if I provided him with my bank account number so that they could bank in the money....

SMS SCAM: Verify message and don't reveal bank account details third party
http://www.nst.com.my/Current_News/NST/Sunday/Frontpage/2273847/Article/index_html

TIPS FROM POLICE:

- When you receive an SMS saying you have won something, always verify it with the company named in the SMS. Contact the company in Malaysia and not the number given to you in the SMS.
- If the message cannot be verified, ignore it.

- If you are a victim, lodge a report.

- You should never provide your bank details, ATM card or PIN number to a third party. The same goes for Internet banking identification or password.

- Do not open a bank account for a third party. If you have done it, close it immediately and lodge a police report.
- If you are asked to call a number to verify your gift and the person on the other end claims to be Malaysian but has a foreign accent, be suspicious.

- Pay attention to the caution notices placed at ATMs.

TIPS FROM MAYBANK:

- Do not respond to text messages from anyone requesting for private information such as Maybank2u username and password.

- Do not reveal your Internet username or password to anyone even if they claim to be from the bank.

- For certain transactions over Maybank2u.com, the bank has implemented a transaction authorisation code (TAC), an added online security feature. Do not register any third party mobile number at Maybank ATMs for the issuance of TAC. Only register your own mobile phone number so that the TAC is sent to you.

- Never allow a third party to use your ATM card or have access to your PIN.

- Always be careful when making online transactions especially at unsecured places like cyber cafes.

Scam via mobile phone - Be careful

My colleague showed me an SMS message on her mobile phone yesterday. The phone number seems to come from Indonesia.

How do they know your SimCard? Isn't it suppose to be a mobile number, instead of SimCard. There is no mention of who you are, just your SimCard. Mmmm, maybe your SimCard is secretly talking to Petronas Mlsy :-p

If you have won something, it would be an official announcement from Petronas instead of a "mysterious" SMS.

Scam via Skype

I have to write this. We use Skype to communicate with our customers, users, support team... I just received a scam via Skype... Beware!!!!

Next thing you know, you have to bank in some money to their account, and than more, and more and finally you are broke and they disappear from your life.

Be smart and don't get fooled by people who promise you $$$. There is nothing free in this world.
