6.12.2009 Greece: 5. Parliament: Syndagma Square

Parliament: Syndagma Square

Syndagma Square is the political and urban heart of Athens and all of Greece for that matter.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier sits at the base of the Parliament Building and is guarded by two Greek soldiers in traditional Greek uniforms.

These soldiers are the Evzones. The Evzones is the name of several historical elite light infantry and mountain units of the Greek Army. Today, it refers to the members of the Proedriki Froura (Presidential Guard), an elite ceremonial unit that guards the Greek Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Hellenic Parliament and the Presidential Mansion.
